Who we are voting for

Programs Finance Committee

Seat 1

Carina Miller

Carina Miller

Hello my name is Carina Miller. I am running for Senate seat 1 Program Finance Committee seat. I am a 3rd year majoring in Ethnic Studies. I grew up on the Warm Springs Indian reservation and I am a Warm Springs Tribal Member. I am currently a member of the Coalition Against Environmental Racism, Multi-Cultural Center Board of Directors, Mujeres, United States Student Association, Oregon Students of Color Coalition, and I am a co-director for the Native American Student Union. I will make a good senator because I am involved with all these different organizations and I know about all their issues and the work they do on student issues. I think the most important issue is that student voices are not being heard. My main goal as a senator would be to make sure students know what’s going on with student groups and programs. Student voice is more powerful than students know and I want to help that voice grow.

Seat 2

Nick Schultz

Carina Miller

Hi my name is Nick Schultz and I am from Gresham, Oregon. This spring, I am running for ASUO Senate Seat 2 Programs Finance Committee. I am a junior with a double major in Political Science and History. In addition, I am a member of the Clark Honors College and I have obtained a minor in Business Administration, with a special emphasis in accounting. Over the last two years, I have served as the Education Coordinator at the UO Campus Recycling Program. I have also served as a representative on the UO Sustainability Coalition and I am the executive director of the "UO Students for Jeff Merkley 2008" campaign.

In the last two years, I have worked from the ground-up to create change at the UO. Already a leader of campus groups, I believe I have the experience to reform student government. The ASUO no longer works with the student body. Students must be empowered to ensure that the ASUO represents the voice of a greater majority. I support an environmentally-efficient campus through stronger investment in renewable practices: saving energy and money. I support Fiscal Reform, primarily through stabilizing incidental fee growth. Lastly, I support a student partnership with Johnson Hall to improve our educational services. I am ready and eager to represent you. Thanks for your consideration and "Rock the Yellow!"

Majors: Ethnic Studies and Sociology
Although this is my first year here at the University of Oregon, I come to elections with experience. I’ve been involved since my freshman year at Western Oregon University. The first organization I was involved with was MEChA or Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan. MEChA was the organization that really opened the doors for me in terms of being involved and helped mold me in to the leader that I am today. During my sophomore year at WOU I served on the executive board (Associated Students of Western Oregon University) as the Judicial Administrator’s intern and as the Statewide co-chair for the Oregon Students of Color Coalition. Both taught me to build on the skills that I already had as a leader and learn new skills that I would use when I transferred. At WOU I was able to experience the change that students could bring about collectively, in their communities and schools through grassroots organizing. I hope to continue to create change here at the University of Oregon as a representative of your voice and our collective goals.

Yr: Junior

I am running for Programs Finance Committee at large because I have been involved in five student organizations in my two at the University of Oregon, and I recognize the importance of students having their voice and opinion heard. My involvement with these groups has increased my ability to work well with others at achieving goals, and being part of these student organizations has improved my ability to make tough decisions and work with diverse groups of people.

My current campus involvement includes: General member in Asian Pacific American Student Union (APASU), secretary for Kultura Pilipinas (KP), mentor for Intercultural Mentoring Program Advancing Community Ties (IMPACT), member of Oregon Students of Color Coalition (OSCC), and member of the United States Students Association (USSA).

EMU Board

Seat 4

Rachel Cushman

Rachel Cushman

Yr: Junior

Hello my name is Rachel Cushman and I am a member of the Chinook Tribe. I am in my third year at the University of Oregon and am majoring in Ethnic Studies and U.S. History. The organizations I am most involved with are: The ASUO Multicultural Center (Co-director), The Native American Student Union (Ambassador), Oregon Students of Color Coalition (general member), Coalition Against Environmental Racism (general member), Mujeres (general member), and The Women’s Center (general member). I am running for the EMU Board position, seat 5. Rarely in institutions are there discourses where students can be heard. I believe that the EMU is a place where student’s voices can thrive and create change; therefore I would like to be in a position to aid in maintaining this space for students.

Seat 5

Emma Kallaway

Emma Kallaway

My name is Emma Kallaway. Currently, I am the Programs Administrator for the ASUO Executive. With this position, I have worked extensively with programs this year. I was also the intern for the ASUO Multicultural Advocate last year. In addition, I work for housing and can attest to the needs of first year and residential students. I would like to hold Senate Seat 5 for the EMU Board because I am a business major. I would like to contribute my input on decisions regarding our incidental fee finances. I helped programs through the budget process this year, and I have extensive experience working with EMU administration in scheduling and resource allocation. I feel I can make rational and educated decisions. Most of all, I would like to stay in a position where I can advocate for programs and students; there is no better place to do all those things than from Senate Seat 5.

Seat 6

Veronica Barrera

Veronica Barrera
"Students must have initiative; they should not be mere imitators. They must learn to think and act for themselves-and be free." ~Cesar Chavez~

My name is Veronica Barrera and I come to you from San Diego, California. I am currently in my third year, here at the University of Oregon, and my major is Family and Human Services (FHS) within the College of Education. Through FHS I have been given the opportunity to intern at LEAD and Springfield High School. In both settings my work has focused on supporting and developing the leadership skills of marginalized youth.

I am a member of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán)- a Latino student union on campus, MUJERES- a group within MEChA promoting Latina empowerment, and OSCC- Oregon Students of Color Coalition.

I am passionate about students not only having a voice but actually being heard on campus, cultural diversity initiatives, appropriate allocations of finances and resources, collaboration with the larger Eugene/Springfield community, and a healthy campus environment that is safe and welcoming for all students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Athletics and Contracts Finance Committee

Seat 7

James Brannon

James Brannon

My Name is James Brannon, I'm running for the Athletic Department Finance Committee. I'm currently an intern in the ASUO with the Multicultural Advocate and the Student Senate. I'm also member of the Black Student Union and the Public Safety Advisory Group (PSAG). Finally engaged with helping with the campaign to departmentalize ethnic studies. As a self identified student of color, I feel I will bring a needed perspective to the Senate and the University; a perspective that will reach under represented groups on campus but still speak to the larger campus community. Through my work in both the ES campaign as well as PSAG I have learned how to engage with students across multiple lines and cross-sections. I’ve seen the power we students can wield when we work together. I would use the skills I’ve learned to help address issues that I care about and affect students all over this campus. This includes the university's privatization that the administration is leaning towards, it is already difficult for students to attend and afford school a change in the structure would close doors of access for students. Additionally I believe that public safety is another critical issue. The establishment of our own police force, would not only make us look more like a private institution but would fundamentally change the way students engage on their campus. Finally I feel that knowledge is our greatest resource, and that students must be aware of issues on campus, and be at the table in decision making. With students at the table, the university will be a better place, and the student experience will be better all around.

Department Finance Committee

Seat 9

Kate Jones

Kate Jones

I am a second year law student here at UO. I am also pursuing an MBA through Oregon’s JD/MBA program. I am currently involved in the ASUO as a Senator and EMU Board member. I also sit on the Recreation Center Advisory Board and Student Building Fee Allocation Committee as a representative of the Senate.

I am interested in running for reelection because I believe strongly in students rights. I believe that students should have a venue to be heard no matter what their beliefs. I believe that students should have the right to more than just a "voice." I believe that students should have a vote.

I would like to work on maintaining and improving student control on campus. Through my work on Senate, the EMU Board, the SRC Advisory Board, and the Student Building Fee Allocation Committee, I have seen that student control is dwindling—in some cases faster than others. Maintaining control is one of the most effective ways to make students voices heard by, and thus is the most important issue to me.

Seat 10

Hailey Sheldon

Hailey Sheldon

My name is Hailey Sheldon and I am running for ASUO Senate because I want to help support the UO community! I was raised in Coos Bay, Oregon and attended Marshfield High School, where I also participated in student government. I am now a junior here at the UO – a Political Science major and member of the Honors College. I am also a debater! I currently compete for the UO Speech and Debate team. I have remained very active in the Oregon high school debate community as well – I am the Student Director of the Oregon Debate Institute, a summer institute the UO offers for aspiring high school debaters nationwide. Debate is purely an exercise in discussion. But I think exercising your voice is the best way to battle apathy. This is why I am so excited about the Your Voice, Your Vote campaign! I am confident I can bring a refreshingly convictionless presence to the UO Senate if elected. But I am doubly excited to be campaigning with Rock the Yellow – whose goal it is to make campus politics louder and more transparent than ever in order to get you involved and talking, so your voice gets a vote. Rock the yellow!

Academic

Seat 12: Architecture/Allied Arts, Psychology and Music

Nick Gower

Nick Gower

Hi, I'm Nick Gower. I am a sophomore pursuing a major in Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM). I currently serve as a proactive voice in the ASUO representing student perspectives, in cooperation with faculty and staff, as a voting member of the Scholastic Reviews Committee (SRC) and the Public Safety Advisory Group (PSAG). I also am a member of the University Debate and Speech Team. These experiences have helped me develop a strong voice and passion for all student perspectives, and value the vast diversity our campus has to offer in both ideas and substance.

Each of us has a stake in this community, and should have ample opportunity to be directly involved in the processes that impact it. As Senator, I will be both a facilitator and an advocate. I will facilitate collaboration between campus interests and student perspectives, and be a constant advocate for direct student involvement.

Outside of the ASUO, I serve as Treasurer of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and work at the federal courthouse as a student clerk with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Seat 13: Business

Adam Ryding

Adam Ryding

My name is Adam Ryding. I am a Business major and currently the Vice President of Professional Activities for Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity within the Lundquist College of Business. I am also a Planning, Public Policy, and Management (PPPM) major and an active Freshman Interest Group (FIG) Assistant for First-Year Programs. I believe that I am a highly capable candidate to represent business students through academic senate seat 13. I understand the needs of business students and those that go beyond the classroom to further their professionalism and educational experience. I am fully aware how clubs/programs within the Lundquist College of Business operate and will attest to their needs to my highest ability as senator.

Seat 14: Social Sciences

Lidiana Soto

Lidiana Soto

My name’s Lidiana Soto and I’m a second year Political Science student. As a member of the UO women’s rugby team, the Dirty Ducks, I’ve familiarized myself with Club Sports department and will work to continue supporting each program. At this time, I hold the Correspondence Coordinator position for MEChA and work with Mujeres and the Women’s Center. During my involvement on campus, I’ve noticed a lack of student involvement and student voice in critical decision-making that goes on here on our campus. It is time for a change, and it is time for student voice to be heard and put into action on campus.

Seat 16: Science

Michael "Mikey" Latteri

Michael Latteri

I am a junior in the Human Physiology department in the pre-medical program. At the UofO I have been an active member of several environmental groups and the UofO College Democrats, and have worked hard to do my part as a conscious citizen to make the changes that our society needs to become a sustainable and just society. As a native to Eugene, I have grown to love this community and am continually doing my part to make it an ever better place. I have been working with youth soccer players for the last three years in the effort to produce well rounded individuals who have had the chance to learn a wonderful sport in a supportive environment. The UofO has been an amazing place to grow and develop for me and I hope to make the changes that will give a wide variety of individuals that opportunity.
